Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
