Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that included little new information.
