Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
